Hallingcast is now a certified Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn). With new routines and clear sustainability principles, we are taking concrete steps within film, web solutions, procurement and working environment – for a more sustainable future for ourselves and our partners.

Today marks a milestone. Hallingcast AS is officially certified as an Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn). It means we have taken steps – big and small – to operate smarter, cleaner and more sustainably, both for ourselves and for our partners. And it feels really good.

Why Eco-Lighthouse?

It started with a need to raise awareness, in ourselves and our partners, of what sustainability actually means in practice. Not just waste sorting and lower electricity use – but everything from procurement and transport planning to digital sustainability and social value creation.

In the process we drew up an environmental policy and sustainability principles that now underpin how we work – and the demands we place on ourselves and our suppliers.

Our focus areas

Digital services: We build light, energy-efficient websites with compressed media and clean code. Our new product «Frö» was developed with exactly this in focus.

Film production: We use H.265 compression, which produces up to 30 times less data than traditional formats. That significantly reduces the climate footprint.

Procurement and equipment: We buy used where we can, and require certifications such as ISO 14001 and FSC for new purchases. We choose local suppliers whenever possible.

Waste and energy: Source separation at Torpomoen (via Retura Val-Hall), reduced electricity consumption and more efficient use of transport and travel.

Safety and working environment: We have introduced safety inspections, completed first-aid training, switched to more environmentally friendly lighting and invested in ergonomic equipment.

It is about more than the environment

Eco-Lighthouse is also about social and economic sustainability. Our ten principles cover everything from aesthetics and job quality to local value creation and cultural identity. We want to contribute to a sustainable Hallingdal – digitally, socially and on a human level.

The four UN Sustainable Development Goals closest to us:

Good health and well-being (3)

Industry, innovation and infrastructure (9)

Sustainable cities and communities (11)

Responsible consumption and production (12)

Mayor Solveig Vestenfor met us today to present the diploma and plaque. This is a milestone for us. Not because Hallingcast is going to save the world – but because, as Solveig put it: «Many small streams make a big river.»

Digital seeds are being sown

In the wake of the certification we have developed Frö – a new product for climate-friendly websites. «Frö» is about both technology and green growth. We can help build the digital infrastructure of the future – with the smallest possible climate footprint.

Read the article about the Frö concept – where we lay out the maths.

We hope more small and medium-sized businesses in Hallingdal will do the same – get certified and raise awareness of practical sustainability among employees and partners.

It is educational, motivating – and quite simply the right thing to do.

Subtitles – why are they so important?

During 2025 it becomes a requirement that organisations – both public and many private – must subtitle all film and audio content they publish. This is part of the EU Accessibility Act (EAA), which aims to secure equal rights for people with disabilities and make digital content accessible to everyone.

Would you buy a brand new car for NOK 12,000?

Not if you were told it only drives forwards, has a range of 11 km, takes 4 days to charge and cannot be locked. Unfortunately, many businesses have been burned buying cheap websites with similar limitations.

Quality takes time – which is why slow processes can give better results

After a few days in Vågå in January, I found myself thinking about quality. In a business context: why it is worth spending time on a seemingly slow process, in order to work more efficiently digitally – and thereby raise the quality of our products.
