We like it when challenges arise from a real need – and we like solving them even better. Hallingcaster Uhørt is a tactile device without a screen, developed for audio playback at exhibitions and guided tours.
This summer, you can press the story
Hallingcast has launched Hallingcaster Uhørt – the fourth version in our series of smart, creative playback solutions we call Hallingcaster. This time it is not about film or screens – but about sound. About the voices that crossed the Atlantic in hope of a better life.
What is a Hallingcaster?
In short, the Hallingcaster series is Hallingcast’s own broadcaster product. Whether the caster gives new life to old equipment – or new content to old surfaces – it has one goal: to broadcast Hallingdal.
Hallingcaster Kurert✓ is rebuilt Kurer radios that play film. New technology inside, nostalgia outside. This one is in the final stage of development. Use cases include cafés, waiting rooms, receptions and meeting rooms.
Hallingcaster Publisert✓ is a web solution where our clients can collect and share videos – from YouTube, Vimeo, Rumble or their own files. See vatsgardsmatfilm.no for a demo. Use case: a landing page for QR codes, for example on product packaging.
Hallingcaster Aktivert✓ is a small playback box that activates unused screens. Use cases include shop windows, meeting places, offices and receptions. See a demo at Samhald in Leveld, «Påsten» in Hol or our office at Torpomoen.
The newest addition to the series: Hallingcaster Uhørt – a whole new way of sharing sound.
A listening experience without a screen
We developed Hallingcaster Uhørt for an exhibition in the centre of Hol in the summer of 2025. The theme? Hallingdal in the USA – about all those who left, stayed, and had a story to tell.
In collaboration with Knut Medhus (former editor of Radio Hallingdal) we have collected 24 audio tracks from the radio’s archive – with Norwegian-Americans and their descendants. The stories are rich, strange and moving. They are stored on a small, robust playback box with 24 buttons – one for each story.
Visitors simply choose which story to hear by pressing a button and putting on a wireless Auracast headset.
What is Auracast?
Auracast is the next generation of audio transmission. A bit like Bluetooth – but with one important difference: you can connect an unlimited number of receivers to a single transmitter. That means one box can send audio to many listeners at once, and the technology makes it easy to scale up.
You can, for example, use the system for guided bus tours (50+ headsets), talks or events where everyone catches the audio – even in noisy surroundings (thanks to built-in noise reduction).
You can also make local history available in museum rooms, waiting rooms or smaller exhibitions.
Digital tech becomes tactile
We believe technology works best when it feels close. «Hallingcaster Uhørt» is as much about pressing a button and hearing a voice – as it is about software and audio files. The tactile experience gives children, the elderly – and everyone in between – a physical gateway to a digital medium (MP3, WAV, AIFF etc).
Come and try it: «Hallingcaster Uhørt» is open to the public in the old Tingstugu in the centre of Hol in the summer of 2025 (from 1 July). There you can hear stories from:
Bottineau, North Dakota
Minneapolis and the Red River Valley
Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan
...and many more.
Every piece is produced to last, to convey and to move.
«Hallingcaster Uhørt» is a product we rent out, and we supply Auracast equipment through an importer.
